Freedom & Civil Rights Scholarship ($5000) – Students must submit a personal essay (350-500 words) demonstrating your efforts and achievements in furthering the values of the civil rights movement. Nan McKay Pathway to Achievement Scholarship ($5000)

The scholarships will be awarded by the Public Housing Authorities Directors Association (PHADA) which is an organization of 1900 housing authorities across the United States. PHADA also serves as an advocate before the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on a variety of regulations governing public housing nationwide.
To apply for the scholarships, students must be a high school senior and living in Public Housing or a Section 8 assisted home and have at least a “B” average. All scholarships require an essay (350-500 words) addressing the topic: “How my public housing and high school experiences have influenced my life?”
The scholarship fund will be administered by the PHADA Scholarship Committee. The money will go directly to the school that the recipient will be attending. The school will deposit the money into the student’s account. The money may only be used to pay for tuition, books, and activities directly related to the student’s education. If the student discontinues his or her education, the unused portion of the scholarship will be returned to PHADA. For more information, contact PHADA at: 202-546-5445.
